Emotional intelligence plays a key role in the social and emotional development of children, yet the role of teachers’ personality traits in this process remains underexplored, particularly in early school age. This study aimed to examine the relationship between teachers’ personality traits and students’ emotional intelligence.
The sample consisted of 354 students aged 9 to 11 and 38 teachers with an average work experience of 24.42 years. The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire–Child Form (TEIQue-CF) and the Big Five Plus Two (BF+2) questionnaire were used.
The results indicate mostly low and statistically non-significant correlations between teachers’ personality traits and students’ emotional intelligence, with a few significant associations. Teachers’ openness was negatively related to students’ emotional disposition (β = –0.182, p < .01) and positively related to their self-esteem (β = 0.203, p < .01). These findings highlight the complexity of the mechanisms underlying the relationship between teacher characteristics and students’ emotional development, as well as the potential role of additional mediating factors, such as teaching styles, school environment, or family support.
