Abstract

The paper will examine the phenomenon of national identity, which particular attention devoted to the concept of Serbian identity in Dubrovnik and the ways in wich it was constructed, deconstructed, and reconstructed. It will also address the strategies of shaping otherness and setting boundaries that can be discerned in Dubrovnik literature, and which served in the formation of imagological representations - those of Dubrovnik's citizens about themselves, of others about them, and, ultimately, in the differentiation of identity points of ,,self" and ,,other" trough literature and culture. The notion of identity is considered from a theoretical perspective as fluid and discursively conditioned, just like the perceptions formed about a given people in the consiousness of the Other. The conclusions that emerge from the facts concerning the history of Dubrovnik, the history of old Dubrovnik literature and more recent Dubrovnik literary production testify that national identity in Dubrovnik was distincly discursive in nature and that it was shaped trough narrative, just as the imagological image of Dubrovnik was discursively constructed. At the same time, discourse proves to be primary means trough which identity, as well as otherness and difference - but also similarity - are expressed.
